Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.
