Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such medications need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
