Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
